The Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved formally introducing the Internet domain .”Xxx”, designed to facilitate the identification of web pages with pornographic content. ICANN, a private U.S. nonprofit that coordinates domains, IP addresses and internet protocols worldwide, today gave its approval to the new domain, which will now be negotiated with the promoter of this initiative, the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR).

ICANN approved the measure “after paying close attention to the indications of an independent advisory panel, and the many public comments on the proposal,” said the director of the organization, Peter Dengate, in a press conference organized in Brussels. This decision culminates a process of more than six years of “efforts” by the organization sponsoring the domain “xxx”, recalling that this suggestion was rejected for reasons of “incorrect” by ICANN in 2004, according to IFFOR in a statement.

With its proposal, the organization that describes itself as “independent, nonprofit” seeks to create “a recognizable label to identify what they offer web pages, without having to visit them. Thus, “both consumers of entertainment for adults and those who wish to avoid will have an identifying mark, right at the end of the web address,” explains IFFOR.

The organization also proposes to assign addresses with the domain .”Xxx” are taken into account “good business practices,” which “will increase the confidence and certainty” for those who visit the pages.

In addition, for persons or families who want to restrict access to “adult” content, the new labeling will allow to create filters on an “easier and more reliable” for porn sites. To complete the process of negotiating the management contract of the domain and it can come into play, and IFFOR ICANN must now reach an agreement on “technical and financial aspects of each project. IFFOR expected that this process is completed “in early 2011 or even earlier,” and claims that it will get around 110,000 pre-booked domains to use the new extension, a number that “will increase now that ICANN has formally approved its application”, according to forecasts.

Director of ICANN, for its part, explained that this organization will only be responsible for coordinating the allocation of domains, and “in any case, the control the contentof them” as porn or not porn, because this task rests with national authorities.
